Aon and APA

Aon is proud to have been appointed as the Broker for the APA Member Insurance (Professional Indemnity and Public & Products Liability Insurance).1 Our expertise extends well beyond the member program. As specialists in the health sector, we work closely with industry associations and health practitioners to understand their evolving needs. Drawing on these insights, we have worked with insurers to negotiate and develop a comprehensive suite of insurance solutions for the health sector.

Why do Australian Physiotherapy Association Members need insurance?

As a physiotherapist, your clients see you for all sorts of pains and strains, helping them with their day to day aches through to total rehabilitation. But like all small businesses, there are risks in the operation of your business. Some incidents could have enough financial strain to completely bring your practice to a stop. Insurance that is customised for the common risks in your industry should be a key consideration when deciding how to protect your business.

If something were to go wrong in the course of your treatment, such as a client alleging your treatment led to their pain worsening, you could quickly be faced with a different kind of pain.

Coming up with thousands of dollars to defend yourself in such situations would probably be quite a stretch. It’s therefore important to have in place appropriate insurance for your physiotherapy practice to help take the tension off your strained finances if you do experience such events.

Here are answers to some commonly asked questions by APA Members

Why do Physiotherapists need Public Liability insurance?

You know there are things in life that are out of our control, like accidents. There could be a loose nail, and someone could snag themselves on it, setting into motion any number of events that could lead you to being sued. You could be held liable if someone is injured or their property is damaged on your premises or because of your business dealings.

Public Liability insurance provides cover for legal liabilities if a member of the public makes a claim that they were injured, or damage was caused to their property because of your business dealings or on your premises2.

Why might I need run-off cover?

Even after you've retired or are no longer practising, you could still be subject to claims from the time you were in business. Under the Combined Professional Indemnity, Public & Products Liability Policy arranged through Aon, run-off cover allows you to arrange complimentary run-off cover for a period of up to 7 years in relation to incidents that happened while you were practising.2

Do I need to contact Aon to arrange my run-off cover?

Run-off cover provides insurance cover for your business after you have ceased your business, retired or left your profession. The Professional Indemnity, Public & Products Liability insurance for Physiotherapists includes complimentary run-off cover, however you will need to contact Aon to discuss and arrange the run-off policy before you cease your professional services and/or business and before the policy expires.1,2

Why do you need to advise your broker of an incident that may lead to a claim?

When the policy is placed on a claims made basis, the policy will respond to insured incidents/claims that are advised to the insurer during the period of cover. If you do not advise of a known incident, and if a complaint or legal action is taken at a later time, it is possible that the claim could be denied by the insurer.

Can I pay my premium on a monthly basis?

We may be able to arrange periodical payment solutions including monthly payment through our premium funding option for certain policies. This option is not available through our online quoting system, and is not available to all clients, so if you are interested in premium funding, we ask that you please contact our Health team on 1800 805 191 or email via [email protected]

What if I need to make a change to my policy?

It is important to keep your policy up to date with the changing shape of your work but also to keep your business and personal information up to date in the event of a claim.

Should your business circumstances change, for example you have changed the services that you offer and you are not sure if your existing insurance covers it anymore, then you can always call one of our experienced friendly brokers to discuss on 1800 806 494 or email the team at [email protected].

How do I renew my policy?

It is important at this stage to review the details of our offer carefully (remember pricing and coverage levels may have changed so it is important to review). If you are happy with the offer and wish to accept, please make your payment by the due date specified on your invoice.
Thank you for looking into renewing your policy through Aon. It is greatly valued that you are pleased with the level of service and coverage you receive.

What should I do if I have not received my certificate of currency or renewal offer/documents?

Please accept our apologies, at Aon we strive to deliver best in class service, so we are sorry to hear you have not received your documents. Please contact the Aon Health team on 1800 806 494 or email via [email protected] and we will send your documents as soon as possible.

What are your opening hours?

Our opening hours are 8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Monday to Friday (except public holidays). If you need to contact us outside of these hours you can email us at [email protected] and we will pick up your query on the next business day.

Is APA Member Insurance compliant with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia (PhysioBA) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra)?

Yes, the APA Member Insurance policy complies with and exceeds all requirements set by the PhysioBA and Ahpra.

APA’s broker transition: what it means for my coverage?

The appointment of Aon as APA’s new insurance broker does not mean there is a change to the insurer providing APA Member Insurance. Vero remains the insurer. Members should continue to refer to their policy documentation for the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions that apply to their cover.

What do I do about my insurance claims?

During the transition, who you contact will depend on when your claim arises.

For claims arising on or before 16 December 2026, please continue to notify BMS on 1800 931 068 or via [email protected], APA’s insurance broker until this date.

For claims arising on or after 17 December 2026, please notify Aon. We will provide claims support and advocacy, including coordinating with the insurer throughout the claims process.

If you are unsure who to contact about a claim, please contact APA member support and they can help direct you to the right team.

If my employer or union provides insurance cover, do I need individual insurance?

The APA recommends that physiotherapists consider holding their own individual professional insurance, even where insurance is provided through an employer or union.

Employer or union arrangements can provide important protection, but that cover may be linked to your employment, workplace or the specific duties you perform in that role. This means it may not extend to physiotherapy services you provide outside your usual employment – for example, volunteering with a community sports club, undertaking additional work or providing services independently.

Your circumstances can also change. If you move employers, change roles or cease employment, the insurance available through your workplace may change or end. It is also important to consider how you would be protected if a complaint or claim relating to earlier work arises at a later date.

Holding your own insurance can provide an additional layer of protection that is attached to you as an individual, rather than relying solely on arrangements provided through your workplace or union.

As with any insurance, cover is subject to the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the policy. If you are unsure about your existing cover or whether APA Member Insurance is appropriate for your circumstances, we recommend seeking advice about your individual insurance needs.

How do I renew my membership online?

Membership renewals occur annually and begin in November, for the following year of membership.

If you have opted to pay in full you will have to manually renew each year through your APA member dashboard before 31 December.

Does my membership renew automatically?

Members who elect to pay by instalments have their membership automatically renewed each year. This helps ensure uninterrupted access to member benefits and, where applicable, insurance cover.

You’ll be notified in advance each year before the APA renews your membership.

However, if you need to change member category you will need to either renew online through your APA member dashboard before 31 December or contact the APA member support team.
